What is mtbf?
MTBF stands for mean time between failures. A common formula is total operating time divided by the number of failures during that period. It is intended for repairable equipment that returns to service after a failure.
The MTBF formula
MTBF = total operating time ÷ number of failures. If a machine operates for 1,000 hours and has four failures, its MTBF is 250 operating hours.
The same failure rules must be used every time. If minor stops are recorded in one month and ignored in the next, the trend will not be trustworthy.
MTBF versus MTTR
MTBF describes reliability between failures. MTTR describes the average time taken to repair after a failure. A machine can have a strong MTTR but poor MTBF if the team repairs it quickly and it fails again often.
