The MTTR formula
MTTR = total repair time ÷ number of repairs. If four completed repairs took 2, 3, 1 and 6 hours of active work, total repair time is 12 hours and MTTR is 3 hours.
The calculation is simple. Defining repair time is the difficult part. Some teams accidentally include time waiting for a part, waiting for production to release the machine or completing paperwork after the machine is already running.
MTTR is not the same as downtime
Machine downtime, active maintenance time, waiting time and total job duration answer different questions. Combining them into one timer makes the final number difficult to trust.

A lower MTTR is valuable when it reflects faster diagnosis and repair. It is not valuable when time is excluded simply to make the dashboard look better.
